Position Title: Agronomist

Reports To: Program Manager

Location: Baledweyne.

Duration: Six (6) months with a possibility of renewal or extension

1.    Objective

We are looking for an agronomist to investigate and implement solutions for SADO beneficiaries in food production and farming activities in Baledweyne. In this role, you will examine, research, and solve problems related to crop management, crop yields and quality. You will also develop tailored agronomic approaches and oversee interventions on behalf of

SADO. To be successful in this role, you should be focused on developing and promoting better farming practices. As an Agronomist, you should be self-motivated, detail-oriented, and analytical with excellent listening, communication, and problem-solving skills.

2.      Essential Functions and Responsibilities

·         Developing better planting, cultivation, and harvesting techniques, improving crop yield, and solving problems for clients.

·         Researching and promoting agricultural strategies to counter the effects of changes in soil, climate, weather, and pest damage.

·         Visiting fields to collect seed, plant, and soil samples.

·         Testing samples for nutritional deficiencies, diseases, or other changes.

·         Assisting with the plant sourcing, testing, and selection.

·         Developing planting and irrigation schedules, budgets, and timelines.

·         Keeping detailed records regarding fields, crop yields, and samples.

·         Generating reports and presenting findings to SADO/OXFAM organizations and other project stakeholders.

·         Conducting training for farmers on good agricultural practices and techniques.

·         Organizing and conducting field visits and other technical work.

Skills and qualifications

2.      Education, Experience & Key Competencies

(a) Education & Experience

·        Bachelor's Degree in Agronomy, Agriculture, or related field.

·        Proven experience in agronomic research and fieldwork.

·        Additional certifications are an added advantage.

·        Ability to work outside, stand, walk, kneel, and stoop for extended periods.

 

·        Proficiency with computers, especially MS Office and diagnostic scientific software relating to agriculture field.

 

·        Exceptional active listening and verbal and written communication skills

·        Strong knowledge of crop production techniques, soil science, and pest management.

·        Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

·        Ability to work independently and in a team.

(b)  Key Competencies

·         High level of integrity and ability to work as part of a professional team.

·         Ability and willingness to work under high pressure to meet tight deadlines

·         Training and capacity building skills

·         Good command of written and spoken English

·         Excellent communication, interpersonal and analytical skills

 

·         Strong ability to work independently, including the ability to multitask, prioritize competing tasks, and manage time effectively.

 

·         Appreciation of project’s host communities’ culture, values, norms, and diversity.

(c)   Deliverables:

·         Monthly reports on field assessments and recommendations.

·         Crop management plans for each farming season.

·         Training materials and workshops for farmers.

·         Evaluation reports on the impact of agronomic interventions.

9.        Terms of Employment

The position will be based in Baledweyne. The initial period of appointment will be for one year with the possibility of renewal subject to performance assessments and availability of funding. The successful candidate will be expected to commence no later than 5th March 2024.
