POSITION INFORMATION
Duty Station: Somaliland
# Positions: 10 of lawyers Positions

Location (Town/City): Three lawyers' positions in Hargiesa, Two lawyers' positions in
Boorama, Three lawyers' positions in Burcoa, One lawyers' position
in Ainabo, One lawyers' position in La,sanod and One lawyers'
Position in Erigabo.
Duration: Six (6) Months with Possible Extension
Postdate Date: 22th April, 2022
- LAWYERS
- Lawyers are responsible for managing their caseloads under the supervision of the Coordinator and Chairperson. Specifically, this will include:
- Ensuring that the ethical and professional standards of the SOLLA as a law office are met;
- Monitoring staff and student workloads in their respective Units;
- Assisting the Coordinator and Chairperson in developing and defining policies relating to the delivery of legal services including updating manuals and training materials as required and monitoring and reviewing case review systems and case closing procedures;
- Maintaining project statistics. The Lawyer is also expected to keep detailed records of prison and police custody visits undertaken by paralegals;
- Assisting the Coordinator and Chairperson with drafting project evaluations, as required;
- Submitting monthly reports to the Coordinator of the SOLLA detailing cases undertaken. The report will include:
- The names and profile of legal aid clients;
- The facts of the case for which they are standing trial and the stage of legal proceeding;
- A certified copy of the interlocutory and final judgment of the court where appropriate;
- Any follow-up required and recommendations of future interventions.
- The Lawyer is responsible for running cases. Specifically, this will include:
- Assisting clients with identifying their legal claims, advising as to their legal rights and obligations; and offering assistance with problem resolution through existing traditional forms of dispute resolution and by way of the Somaliland judicial system;
- Preparing for trial including drafting legal documents; gathering evidence; conducting legal research; and interviewing clients and witnesses;
- Representing clients at court;
- Supervising and coordinating the activities of paralegals which include establishing weekly work plans; monitoring their overall performance and providing constructive feedback.
Skills and qualifications
- Bachelor degree in Law and licensed from Somaliland committee for disciplinary lawyers
- Minimum 3 years of work experience in practicing law (Practitioner degree) in various case types, mainly on supporting acquisition of civil documentation
- Native Somali, Fluent in both English and Somali (speaking and writing).
- Knowledgeable legal Aids reporting required tools in prospective coordinate with respective caseworkers to weekly and monthly report the status of the legal counseling, awareness raising and court representation.
- Computer literate mainly in Microsoft Office package.
- Excellent interpersonal and problem-solving skills, creativity and flexibility Ability to mobilize and engage in community dialogue and discussion.
- Ability to negotiate and mediate sensitive matters at community level.
- Well-organized, self-motivated and ability to work in a team.
- Knowledge of Somaliland Legal System and international human right Legal Frameworks
- Practical working experience in lawyer, judge, and prosecutor. In case you are a lawyer you should have a valid practicing license.
- Desire and demonstrated passion to assist Somaliland’s Poor and extremely vulnerable communities. Computer literate with ability to use Microsoft word, excel etc.
- Native Somali speaker and proficiency in English Work experience with human rights agencies. Experience engaging with the justice sector and/or civil society in Somaliland
- Demonstrated understanding of the rule of law in preventing and protecting vulnerable members of the community
- Knowledge and familiarity with informal justice and alternative dispute resolution mechanisms; and specialized experience in GBV ceases
