BACKGROUND

Ubah Inspire Initiative Organization is a women-led, non-governmental organization that addresses the diverse needs of women and girls through a holistic approach centered around sports, arts, networking, education, and overall wellbeing. The organization provides a safe, inclusive, and empowering environment where women can realize their full potential as healthier, more confident, and well-connected individuals.

Ubah Inspire was founded in response to the critical need for safe spaces that support women’s physical and mental wellbeing, foster personal growth, and encourage meaningful social connections. Through its tailored programs, the organization promotes social coexistence, social cohesion, peaceful communities, and sustainable development by empowering women to become active participants and leaders in their societies.

ABOUT THE EU PROJECT:

“Kick Start for Equality Using Sports and Arts” is a four-years EU funded project implemented by Plan International in partnership with local implementing partners – NAFIS and UBAH Inspire. The aim of the project is to advance human rights and strengthen social cohesion through community sports and arts engagement in Somalia, with a particular focus on young women and girls. Based on the work of both Plan International (Plan) and Plan International Somalia (PIS), this action also capitalizes on the experiences of the co-applicants, Network Against Female Genital Cutting in Somaliland (NAFIS) Network and the women-led Ubah Inspire Initiative Organization, in working with local communities on social cohesion and girls and young women in sports. The objective of this project is to contribute to the promotion and protection of women and girls’ rights and to increase social cohesion and dialogue within the vulnerable youth communities. And it aims at achieving 2 broad objectives.

1: To support civil society and duty bearers in the protection and promotion of women and girls’ rights.

2: To increase social cohesion and dialogue within vulnerable youth communities.

Output two (2) promotes the empowerment of girls and women to address social issues identified in IDP settlements and their host communities. It will support initiatives aimed at increasing their participation in sports and arts by establishing a pilot program in schools and scaling up the capacity of the Ubah Centre to use sport as a safe space among young women and girls and by expanding the pool of female coaches through training and PSS support. Digitalization and social media will be utilized to create safe spaces for girls and women to share their social/gender related and peacebuilding issues and promote human rights through influencers and activists. Key risks under this output include influence of religious leaders to prevent school and national level sports tournaments, campaigns associated with the presidential elections disrupt activities, safeguarding and protection risks and insufficient number of female coaches available
